Thieves’ Oil vs 2020 Coronavirus
Viruses and plagues are not new – just new to 2020! The coronavirus comes late in the march of plagues that humanity has had to endure over the centuries. But guess what! Though ancient plagues struck fear in the hearts of those people to whom it was exposed, there were multiple proven remedies which defied the odds of survival. One of these is termed “Thieves’ Oil.”
The story goes that there was a group of thieves whose homemade concoction of herbs preserved and protected them from the plagues of the day, which included the Bubonic. Some say it was vinegar based with specific steeped herbs. Others say it was oil based. The favorite recipes were comprised of spices carried via the spice route, by sea from far away countries. The European home-grown recipes 0f the time, not as fragrant, but also effective included rosemary, thyme, garlic, sage, wormwood, campanula, meadowsweet, lavender, fresh rue, mints, and camphor all dissolved in drinkable spirits.
The more aromatic recipe traditionally ascribed to the four thieves, called “Thieves’ Oil” is inclusive of some of the following herbs: clove bud oil, cinnamon bark oil, rosemary, eucalyptus, lemon oil, rosemary oil and more.
Today’s preoccupation with essential oils, makes it an easy go-to using oil combinations which hail from long ago. Any way, to continue the tale, these French thieves rumor has it, slathered a steeped mixture of herbs in vinegar over themselves, even supposedly tying a saturated bandana (mask) over their noses and mouths.
Their reason for risking death also varies according to the story-teller. Some say they were greedily trying to steal their way to wealth and protected themselves via precautionary herbs. Others state, no, they were caught stealing from the deathly ill and as a punishment were told to bury those who had died of the bubonic plague. In order to protect themselves they used ancient family recipes to complete their grisly mission. Yet, one more version claims the thieves, when caught stealing offered to exchange their secret recipe in exchange for official leniency.
Here is an example of one home-made recipe which made it through history to land in the Museum of Paris.
“The following vinegar recipe hung in the Museum of Paris in 1937, and is said to have been an original copy of the recipe posted on the walls of Marseilles during an episode of the plague:
Take three pints of strong white wine vinegar, add a handful of each of wormwood, meadowsweet, wild marjoram and sage, fifty cloves, two ounces of campanula roots, two ounces of angelic, rosemary and horehound and three large measures of camphor. Place the mixture in a container for fifteen days, strain and express then bottle. Use by rubbing it on the hands, ears and temples from time to time when approaching a plague victim.” Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, Gattefosse’s Aromatherapy (CW Daniel Company, Ltd. First published in Paris, France in 1937 by Girardot & Cie.), 85-86.
Many of these recipes are alive and well today, each with their documented versions of which herbal combination works best.
Following is another do it yourself recipe. It is very strong. Be sure to dilute with a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil, at 1 drop of your thieves oil to 5-10 drops of other oil.
38 drops clove oil
30 drops lemon oil
20 drops cinnamon oil
12 drops eucalyptus oil
10 drops rosemary oil

Please note, most essential oils are SO concentrated they must be mixed with what is termed a “carrier” oil, in order to use them on your skin. The carrier oil may be any oil such as olive, coconut oil or even as the French thieves supposedly did, you may mix them with vinegar. And your purchased oils will last quite a while. It just takes ten drops or so to a quarter cup of carrier oil. Remember though… you won’t smell nearly as nice with vinegar as your base, as opposed to oil!
Stay protected with essential oils!
